Are used cars better for the environment than new cars?

The environment is the habitat of each and every living thing on earth. As such it should be protected under all costs. In addition to protection, all aspects that pose a threat to the cleanliness of the environment should be done away with. In this light there has always existed a huge debate as to whether old cars are more environment friendly than the new cars. This is one debate that car manufacturers have been fighting day in day out. This is because of the fact that the debate puts the fate of their future in jeopardy. However research has shown that old cars are more environment friendly than the new cars.

The environmental effect and cost of new hybrid cars
New cars have received world wide recognition and acceptance due to the low emission levels and economical fuel consumption. However despite their great features, new cars have for a longtime had a great impact on the environment especially during their manufacture. A research by a Japanese university, Sekei University in late 2008 proved that over 28% of the total carbon monoxide emitted by the car occurs during manufacture. This is quite a high level of carbon monoxide production bearing in mind that the remaining 72% is spread over the 6-7 years that the car will be in use. Most car manufacturers produce at least a hundred cars in a day. This translates to very high level of carbon monoxide emission every day. In addition to this, the technologies that are being used in the present day to manufacture cars emit very harmful radiations to the atmosphere. These emissions have been credited with air pollution leading to carcinogenic conditions in people.

Advantages of old cars over new ones
Research has shown that with the correct maintenance practices, the life span of a car can be extended to up to 25 years. This means that in these 25 years there will be minimal or no manufacturing of cars. This way it is impossible to eliminate the 25% carbon monoxide emission of new cars during their manufacture. The engines of most old cars can be professionally tuned to enable for minimal fuel consumption. This cuts down on the barrels of fuel that are to be mined per annum. This helps in reducing the maintenance costs of most old cars and therefore they become more sustainable.

According to a research report on fuel efficiency of old cars, the   fuel efficiency levels of most cars is outdated with some of the levels dating up to the 80’s.However the research done in the USA provides that it is possible to effectively increase the efficiency levels by more than 80%.Withincreased fuel efficiency, it becomes entirely easy to control the carbon monoxide emission levels in old cars. New cars on the other hand come with Hi-Tech engine systems. This makes the modification of the engine such that it becomes a low carbon monoxide emitter is quite hard. This factor is the main reason as to why most new cars have a span of only about 7 years after which they are no longer good for the road.

It is therefore important and essential that you maintain your car at the best conditions in order to increase its span. In this way you are able to cut down on your car’s pollution on the environment.
